Ah Superman, the epitome of decency in the DC Universe, a beacon of light and hope in a world of darkness and villainy. Frequently depicted as a saviour figure, Superman’s honour and heart prevent him ever turning cruel in main continuity. In elseworlds takes however, writers have often let their imaginations run wild with how a Superman heel turn might look.

While not the most extreme example of a bleaker Superman, Frank Miller’s classic, The Dark Knight Returns, offers one of the saddest glimpses of the red cape becoming a turncape.

Far in the future, Superman sells out the League in favour of the US Government and would ultimately destroy and dismantle the League (a good example being the one armed Oliver Queen we meet in later chapters), leading to a less super powered, far more corrupt future Earth.

While the Man of Steel believes himself to still be fighting the good fight, bringing order to a world hungry for chaos, his actions here show how devastating his betrayal of the League would be. The best and the strongest of them all, Superman’s single handed destruction of every hero in his way is a testament to his power and the heartbreak that would follow should he ever turn on his friends and allies.
