3. Mother Of The Year - Death In The Family
Poor Jason Todd. Often the punching bag of Batman comics, Jason’s run as Robin left a lot to be desired and lead to one of DC’s more infamous eighties tales. After being relieved of his Robin duties, a cranky Jason sets off to the Middle East to find and meet his mystery mother for the first time.
Meanwhile, Batman conveniently finds himself in the same area after the Joker escapes Arkham and gets into arms dealing. Batman and Robin ride again, foiling various plots in the process.
Jason ultimately meets his mother, Sheila, an embezzling aid worker being blackmailed by the Joker. Despite her son being one half of Batman and Robin, Sheila sticks with Mr J and coldly betrays her son to him. What follows is poor Jason getting beaten to death by the Clown Prince of Crime. Where did Sheila go whilst her son’s cranium was getting pulverised? Out for a quick smoke.
Near death by this point, Jason is finished off by a time bomb in the warehouse much to Batman’s devastation. One of the grimmest moments in Batman’s long run, its ramifications are felt to this day.
