Literally the result of Bruce Wayne's mind breaking, 'Zur-En-Arrh' is a persona he created to deal with a fractured psyche. It's not clear if the whole 'patchwork of garbage' costume or dependency on meth was part of the plan though. If it wasn't originally it sure became vital to it later.

A Batman of two origins, Zur-En-Arrh Batman was originally seen in the Silver Age of DC comics. Appearing as alternate version of Batman from the planet of the same name, Zur-En-Arrh Batman need Nor-Ma-El Batman's help in defeating a load of robots, and that was essentially that. It was the second appearance of this colourful caped crusader that was a tad weirder though.

Calling himself Batman "when you take Bruce out of the equation", the Batman of Zur-En-Arrh was brought out by Doctor Hurt and Black Glove via hypnosis trigger words, and drugs, and all sorts of nonsense. He was far more brutal than the conventional Batman and far more crazy, as he had to have that irritating Bat-Mite creature following him around as a kind of anchor to sanity. Yes, that floating midget in cheap cosplay was his way of staying sane. Maybe it's time to take a night off, Bruce?
