2. Unstoppable

Although Joss Whedon is mostly known for helming the first two Avengers flicks and being the mastermind behind Buffy The Vampire Slayer, Angel and Firefly, he's also a really great writer too, which fans found out when he began writing the Astonishing X-Men series.

Readers who are unaware of Whedon's time on Astonishing X-Men should check out his entire run, the story arc 'Unstoppable' is a personal favourite. Set on the alien planet of Breakworld, the X-Men try to defend Earth from the leaders of the planet who intend on destroying the planet by using a giant bullet. That's right, a giant bullet.

As fans of Whedon's movies and TV shows know, he possess the great ability of giving each character their own moment to show how awesome and integral they to the story and he does the very same with each member of the Astonishing X-Men, especially during this run. Although it seems like an obvious thing to do, when it comes to team books, lesser known characters can easily get left in the backgroud.

However, without spoiling too much, it's surprisingly Kitty Pryde a.k.a Shadow Cat who is the breakout star of this particular story arc. Whedon comes up with an 'astonishing' moment for her character near the end that will make you love her forever.
