10 Must-Read X-Men Storylines
3. God Loves, Man Kills
Written by Chris ClaremontArt by Brent AndersonIf you're a fan of X2: X-Men united and lets face it, who isn't a fan then God Loves, Man Kills is a story you'll be familiar with but arguably even better than the movie. Written by arguably the best X-Men scribe of all time Chris Claremont, this story introduces William Stryker into the books lore.
While in the movie Strker is a mutant hating general, in the comics he's a Reverend who is hell bent on destroying those born with the X-gene. After kidnapping Professor X and attempting to use his psychic abilities to destroy every mutant on the planet earth, the X-Men join forces with arch nemesis Magneto to try and track down the professor and stop a mutant genocide.
While Claremont's tales are far from light-hearted, this story is a particularly dark one. After all, genocide is certainly no laughing matter. Although the X-Men are used to dealing with super powered villains, Claremont's ability to make a human so dangerous that the two enemies need to come together is genius.
The story is fantastic, but the best part about it is the ending as it helps set up decades of issues between homosapiens and homosuperiors down the line.
