10 Indie Comics That Deserve Your Attention

5. Translucid (Boom! Studios)

Creators: Claudio Sanchez, Chondra Echert & Daniel Bayliss Read if you like: Batman (specifically The Killing Joke), Meta-commentary on Superheroes Current Issue: 4 If you caught the Batman/Joker Fan-fiction/Love Letter called The Deal (if not you can find it here) then you may know what to expect here (it's even drawn by the same man - Daniel Bayliss). Translucid takes the idea of archenemies, and delves deep into the core concepts of hero and villain, deconstructing the archetypes and unravelling everything you think you know about superheroes. It's only a 6-issue mini series yet there is a whole heap of plot crammed into every issue. The art is vibrant and trippy and uses a bizarrely off-kilter colour palette to constantly keep your mind active. As you fall deeper down the rabbit-hole, the series really dissects the motivations of a hero (which could easily be Batman) and tries to understand not only what would drive a normal man to put on a costume and fight crime, but how that personality could be mirrored in a twisted villain such as The Horse (or Joker). Using original characters The Navigator (hero) and The Horse (villain), writers Sanchez and Echert craft a complex narrative that is rich in iconography and very rewarding for those who want a more engaging, thoughtful and intelligent read.
