10 Non-Superhero Comics You Didn't Know Were Becoming Films And TV Shows

5. Locke & Key

Black Magick
IDW Publishing

This one's long in coming, with rights passed from Fox to Hulu to Netflix and a few unfortunate delays eventually leading to principal photography being completed just this year.

This acclaimed title by Joe Hill and Gabriel Rodriguez follows three siblings who, after experiencing the loss of their father at the hands of a disturbed teen, move into an old house called Keyhouse, in Lovecraft, Massachusetts with their mother, where strange, supernatural things start to develop - ones eventually revealed to have been involved in their father's murder. With a demon trying to take some magic keys and a mysterious past revolving around their deceased father, the story makes for a fantastic mix of horror fantasy elements, framed around personal, real life issues.

It's a dark title, nuanced and honest in a way that would likely connect with viewers, and its slowly unravelling mysteries would keep an audience riveted, while the way its three sibling protagonists each deal with loss keeps it grounded.

Though it took a while to get off the ground, principal photography was completed in July 2019, so chances are good that it will finally get the series this fantastic title deserves.
