1. Sandman (Vertigo & Marvel)
Two very different, but very awesome characters find themselves in the number one spot here - Vertigo and Marvel's Sandmen. Vertigo's Sandman has had many aliases - Morpheus, Dream of the Endless, Kai'ckul, Lord L'Zoril and Murphy - but his titular comic is known as The Sandman. He is one of the seven Endless - inconceivably powerful beings who are older and greater than the gods themselves. The Sandman is both the lord and personification of all dreams and stories and all that is not in reality. Marvel's Sandman is Flint Marko - a Spider-Man villain who, thanks to an accident at a nuclear testing site involving sand that had been irradiated by an experimental reactor, has the ability to turn himself into, and merge with, sand. As a result, he has superhuman strength, durability and endurance, the ability to alter his own density and size, and a vulnerability to water.
