10 Reasons Batman Is RUINING DC Comics
6. His Stories Lack Consequence
A lack of consequences within superhero comics is not an uncommon sight, but Batman is one of the guiltiest characters to skirt consequences.
Bane breaks Batman's back? No problem - he'll heal up in no time. Batman invaded Apokolips to find a chaos shard and resurrect Damian, with no retaliation. Even the longest-running Bat-related consequence, the death of Jason Todd, was uprooted as he was revived and became the Red Hood.
The lack of consequences makes it difficult to build tension as anything that happens to Batman - or the members of his extended family - will be reversed and return to the status quo. Therefore, it takes a lot for readers to become invested past enjoying the cat and mouse chase between the hero and his villains. It seems Batman can only feel the consequences of his actions in Elseworlds stories as they're outside of mainstream DC continuity.
With Alfred's death recently in Batman #77 (2019), only time will tell when and if DC will resurrect Bruce's father figure. James Tynion IV is addressing the fallout of Alfred's death in his current run. It would be interesting to see how Batman moves forward knowing his actions led to Alfred's death, but with this being comics, it remains to be seen whether or not Pennyworth will really stay dead.
