10 Reasons Ultimate Spider-Man Is The GREATEST Spider-Man Run Ever
6. Everything Is Re-Contextualised For The Modern Day
The first issue of Amazing Spider-Man released in March of 1963 and therefore much of Spider-Man's origin in ingrained within the sixties setting. As mentioned previously, it can a little bit disorienting when the series continues to develop through five decades yet Spider-Man never seems to grow past the age of thirty. When the Ultimate Universe was launched in 2000, it made sure to make the setting reflective of the modern era.
For Spider-Man this meant moving away from the over the top whacky science of the sixties to the more grounded science of the modern day.
This mostly affects the villains of Spider-Man's mythos, as some characters wouldn't translate well with the same origin. Mysterio's original origin of being a washed up special effects artist is great, but it just wouldn't fit within the Ultimate Universe. Choosing to modernise everything also ensures the series feels fresh and different compared to mainstream Marvel continuity.
It also leads to Spider-Man having to deal with issues that simply never arose during the sixties. For instance, with modern technology Spider-Man getting changed secretly down alleyways won't suffice. Therefore he has to accept help from Nick Fury in keeping his identity secret, which organically folds Peter into the larger Marvel Universe.
