10 Reasons Why Batman Needs Alfred Back

8. Damian Wayne

Alfred Pennyworth
DC Comics

Bruce Wayne’s biological son Damian had a complicated relationship with Alfred Pennyworth that evolved into a respectful and almost grandfatherly one. The butler was completely unimpressed and definitely not scared of the tiny, rude, and violent assassin. The boy dismissed Alfred and treated him like nothing more than a servant until Batman set him straight. Unfazed, Pennyworth returned any rude comment with his own British wit and sarcasm.

Alfred advocated for Damian with Batman. He fought with Bruce to be more compassionate to the boy, to be more understanding of his attempts to change from his assassin ways, and to treat Damian as his son instead of a soldier. The butler also gave the boy a kitten, which was also named Alfred, to go along with his dog Titus, given to him by Bruce, and Batcow, who Damian saved after a trip to a slaughterhouse.

Damian blames himself for Alfred's death as he was the one that violated Thomas Wayne’s edict, which caused Bane to murder Pennyworth before the young hero’s eyes. Robin was so traumatized that he carried the image with him for months. He had the opportunity to resurrect Alfred via a Lazarus Pit but knew that his friend wouldn’t want that and it wouldn’t be “him”. Near death during the fight on Lazarus Island, Damian believed he heard Alfred spurring him to get up and fight.
