10 Reasons Why Batman Needs Alfred Back
7. Dick Grayson
Alfred Pennyworth and Dick Grayson had a very special relationship. Dick considered Alfred to be his second father after Bruce Wayne. And Alfred made a concerted effort to make sure that he was as much of a friend as he could be to the young boy, more so than he had been with young Bruce. Instead of chastising young Grayson for using his superior skills in taking on a group of bullies while out of costume, Alfred commends him, saying not all heroes wear capes.
Alfred made sure to pay attention to the legal situation of Tony Zucco, the man that killed Dick's parents, and every time the mobster came up for parole, the butler would plead with the board to keep him in jail. He did this for 11 years without telling either of his surrogate sons until Zucco was eventually released. Pennyworth also made sure that Grayson knew that even though Batman “fired” him in Batman #408, Dick would always have a home at Wayne Manor.
It was revealed in Nightwing #78 that Alfred was a billionaire, and he left all his money to Dick Grayson after his death. In the accompanying letter, Pennyworth stated how proud he was of his son and how he knew he was the perfect person to leave the money to because he would see the money as an opportunity to help others.
