The Avengers have sported some of the greatest lineups in the comic book medium, with Captain America, Iron Man and Thor all key staples of the team. The X-Men are no different, with Cyclops, Wolverine and Storm usually all a permanent fixture of the main team. However, while the Avengers have only really branched off into spin-off territory with the West Coast Avengers and the Secret Avengers, the X-Men boast the superior number of supporting comics.

X-Factor, New Mutants, X-Force, Excalibur and Alpha Flight are just a couple of the successful comics that have spun-off from the X-Men, and that's without even mentioning the numerous solo books that have focussed on specific X-Men over the years.

Of course, there's something to be said regarding quality over quantity, but the long-running popularity of the X-Men has ensured that numerous other titles have emerged over the years, some forgettable, others quite the opposite.

The Avengers are basically just a different beast. They pool their ranks from characters already established in their own adventures, whereas most X-Men characters start out in the main X-Men series. The fact they can then accumulate enough attention to then launch their own spin-off comics is a testament to their charm, and for why they work better as an ensemble than they do apart, which can't always be said about the Avengers.
