Let's be clear - the Avengers have featured in some of the most amazing Marvel comics of all time. The likes of the Kree-Skrull War, Kurt Busiek's run on the book and later Jonathan Hickman's have all ensured the team are a fondly remembered part of Marvel's library. The X-Men, on the other hand, seem to have the lion's share of iconic comics.

Days of Future Past, God Loves, Man Kills, the Dark Phoenix Saga, Age of Apocalypse, New X-Men and Astonishing X-Men - all have gone on to reiterate the X-Men's status as Marvel's foremost group. The first three examples are from Chris Claremont's seminal stint on the comic, while the latter three have arrived in more recent times, courtesy of scribes Grant Morrison, Joss Whedon and dozens more.

Both super-teams have had their fair share of forgettable books, but the point is that Marvel fans are spoiled for choice when it comes to reading either team's catalogue. It's just that the X-Men, mainly thanks to Claremont, boast a greater amount of iconic comics.
