Unless you've been living under a rock, you know all about the MCU's Guardians of the Galaxy franchise. With two films and appearances in Avengers: Infinity War already under wraps, it would be hard to find anyone who didn't know who the Guardians of the Galaxy were.

That being said, not a lot of comic book fans had any knowledge of the characters in the film or the team itself until Marvel launched the new roster back in 2008. Before the new roster included the likes of Groot, Drax, Gamora, Star-Lord, and Rocket Racoon, hardly anyone had read the book in years.

The reason behind that has everything to do with it being relegated to relative obscurity. The original Guardians of the Galaxy was published back in 1969 and it went through some changes over the years. It was never as popular as it ultimately became when Marvel relaunched the title in 2008.

The new characters and new team roster not only brought the Guardians of the Galaxy back into the limelight, they inspired the movie that would ultimately be released in 2014. Given those characters' impact on the MCU as a whole, it's easy to see its importance the relaunch had.
