In a story drawn by horror icon Bernie Wrightson, a 12-year-old girl, dressed as a cowboy, confronted Spider-Man after he thwarted a break-in. She seems to know his identity, his Uncle Ben, and claimed to be a magician with knowledge of Doctor Strange. After trying and failing to contact Strange, Peter met the girl and was taken through a magical doorway. She revealed herself to be Marandi Sjorokker, aka Spindrifter Mandi. She had been the papergirl for the Parker home when Peter was five. She was also 219 years old.

Mandi was the daughter of notorious sorcerer Kurundred the Blood-Drinker. In the realm of Cloudsea, he was defeated by his enemies and marked with a death rune. Knowing that his enemies feared that his daughter may one day grow up to be like her father, he cast a spell to stop her aging.

With Spider-Man’s aid, Mandi fought the Tordekakerlakk, at first a huge cockroach, but each time it was defeated, it evolved into a more horrific and powerful monstrosity. Mandi began to despair that it was a final curse on her family but Peter realized that Spindrifter needed to unleash her full power upon the creature and that it was a creation of her father’s to overcome her limitations and to break the aging spell. An overjoyed Mandi returned Spidey to his responsibilities in New York.
