10 Secrets Of Neil Gaiman’s Death Of The Endless

6. The Only Death In The DC Universe

There have been a number of beings that have claimed to be Death. The Black Racer was the Death of the New Gods. Nekron was the Death of the Green Lanterns or the absence of light on the emotional spectrum, and the Black Flash was Death for the speedsters that tapped into the Speed Force.

There have also been multiple appearances of skeletal figures in robes claiming to be the personification of Death. There are a number of religions each having its own “God of Death.” Death often allows these Death Gods to ferry souls to a particular afterlife or, as in the case of Ra and Element Girl, release their hold on them and allow that individual to die.

But they are not truly Death. She is the only true Death. She was once referred to as “she who trumps and defines all of existence.” Death can see the end of every life form she encounters, including the nigh immortal members of her own family, The Endless. And while her personality often makes people believe that she represents Death as a “comforting release”, she would be the first to remind everyone that she is neither kind nor comforting. She is merely Death.
