10 Shocking Times Superheroes Just QUIT

5. Black Panther - Black Panther #50

Captain America Arrested
Marvel Comics

If there is a single writer responsible for bringing the Black Panther into modern comic book reading attention, it would definitely have to be Christopher Priest and his acclaimed run on the character. It's some of T'Challa's best stories and moments, including the one where he actually quit being The Black Panther.

After some shenanigans involving a future version of T'Challa found in suspended animation (it's a long story, Priest's run is WEIRD) T'Challa, to the shock of everyone, quit being the Black Panther in a bout of lost hope. To the point where he gave away the suit to a New York detective named Kasper Cole.

What was even more shocking, though, was how he came back. Because it turned out he never really left, having quit in some uber elaborate scheme to bring down the 66 Bridges Crime Cartel. It makes a lot more sense in context, promise.

The fact that Kasper Cole was Black Panther for a decently long time before T'Challa took back the mantle was a ballsy move on the part of Priest, and really made readers wonder if T'Challa was really coming back or not.
