10 Strangest Jack Kirby Creations

7. Fin Fang Foom

Fin Fang Foom Fin Fang Foom first makes his appearance in Strange Tales #89 from 1961, after being awoken by a young boy whose country is being invaded by Communist China. It was later revealed that Fin Fang Foom is an alien from Kakaranathara (say that five times fast), a race of aliens who arrived in ancient China with the intent of taking over. Being shape shifters, they took the form of humans, assimilating into society until the best opportunity to strike. The navigator for the aliens, Fin Fang Foom, could not shape shift, and was placed in a tomb under an induced coma. Fin Fang Foom first appears in the Silver Age of Comics, when Marvel was experimenting with aliens and monsters. Many of the stories they created led to lasting commercial success in the Bronze Age of Comics, so on paper there€™s nothing particularly uncanny about Fin Fang Foom. The thing that is the strangest about Fin Fang Foom is Kirby€™s illustration choices, most notably his face. With the body of a giant sea creature with superhuman physical attributes, acid mist breath, telepathy, flight, a prolonged lifespan and a mastery of martial arts, it seems odd that Fin Fang Foom always looks like he€™s exhausted of living.
