10 Superhero Redesigns That ACTUALLY Worked
8. Guy Gardner
Guy Gardner's initial appearance was nothing special as he sported the standard Green Lantern colors. Nothing in his design made him stand out from Hal Jordan and the character ended up looking like a red-headed version of him with no special qualities.
But once the character was reworked by Steve Englehart and Joe Stalon in the 1980s, the emerald hero became an interesting replacement with an arrogant demeanor and rowdy attitude. This change helped him get out of Hal's shadow and with that change, came a costume that suited Gardner much better.
No longer did he look like a carbon copy of Hal Jordan and instead, he sported a leather jacket that fit his hot-blooded personalility. Had it been any other hero, this look would have ended up being too try-hard for many readers' taste yet with Gardner, it fit like a glove.
It goes to show that with the right creative direction, lesser-known superhero characters can blossom and even match their more famous predecessors. And while Hal Jordan remains the quintessential Lantern, Garder is still one of the best to hold the mantle.
