10 Surprising Comic Book Crossovers That Somehow Work

2. JLA/Avengers

Although it might be argued that throwing the Marvel and DC universes together into one big crossover isn't really all that surprising, the fact the feat is yet to be repeated for almost two decades intimates just how rare JLA/Avengers was.

The series, written by Kurt Busiek and drawn by George Perez, is commonly cited as the best collaboration Marvel and DC have ever done, and for good reason. The story was beautifully executed, with Perez capturing the essence of both publishers' worlds effortlessly. Busiek even saw fit to answer long debated fan questions about what would happen were the two worlds to ever collide, in particular whether or not Superman could ever lift Mjolnir.

It's a beloved series and for good reason. Even though Marvel and DC fans love to have fun at each other's expense, one thing both fandoms can agree on is that the last time they met, it made for one of the best team-up books in recent memory.
