10 Surprising Superhero Romances You Didn't Know Existed

8. Midnighter And Apollo

Harley Quinn Poison Ivy
DC Comics

While not the first openly gay characters in comic book history, Midnighter and Apollo do hold the honour of the first gay marriage on the page. The Authority #29 finally saw the two tie the knot after a long relationship that spawned in 1999's The Authority #8.

It was a surprise when they were absorbed into the DC universe when the comics giant bought out Wildstorm Comics. Many expected the characters to be brushed under the carpet, considering the two were originally intended to parody Batman and Superman. Unfortunately, their early days at DC seemed to be missing something.

The relationship was completely ignored and showed the two as younger, inexperienced versions of themselves. Thankfully Jim Starlin was having none of it and when he took on the series, Starlin wrote in a time travel event that returned the characters to their full powered, deeply in love selves.

The two broke up during Midnighter's solo series in 2015, which was cancelled alongside The New 52. Steve Orlando had spent the past year with the character and wanted to bring him back for DC Rebirth. This spawned a six-issue run simply titled "Midnighter and Apollo", which was nominated for a GLAAD award for the way Orlando handled their relationship.
