10 Terrifying Comics About Real Life Crimes

5. Becoming Unbecoming By Una

This graphic novel is another example of one which is more of an autobiography with the back drop of a true crime event, rather than an actual straight up account of murder. It does however tell a very frightening and heartfelt story of sexism in the 1970s.

Una tells the reader of the experiences she had growing up in Leeds in the North of England: a place where she is surrounded by football hooliganism, rampant sexism and abuse. This is all part of her life at the tender age of twelve years old.

This whole situation becomes a lot worse when the Yorkshire Ripper, later to be identified as Peter Sutcliffe, begins his reign of terror on the neighbourhoods of Northern England. Panic and hysteria begins to spread like wildfire. When he eventually is apprehended, it is hard for the police to believe that a family man is capable of such horrendous crimes.

The graphic novel is an emotional journey of a girl who lives in a world where she never quite feels safe, whether it be because of her neighbours or the looming threat of a demented serial killer who just be around the corner.
