10 Things DC Wants You To Forget About Wonder Woman

1. Her Strange, Kinky Roots

Dc Comics

The various origin stories of Wonder Woman might be cause for confusion, but DC is positively forthcoming with those compared to Diana Prince's actual, real-world origins. Which is because they're all the more strange, and more than a little perverse. Initially the creation of radical psychologist and writer William Moulton Marston, the character was supposed to fight for justice, love, peace, and sexual equality.

The fact that she was so often pitched against the Nazis too was just a matter of circumstance. Whilst Wonder Woman was often used as anti-Axis propaganda during the Second World War the real political statements Marston wanted to put forward with her was his sincere belief that the world would be much better off if it was run by women, as evidenced by the polyamarous relationship he shared with his wife and a younger female student.

Even their kinky three-way relationship came into play with Wonder Woman, as the lasso of truth €“- and the amount of times Wonder Woman spent being tied up in it €“- reflected their interest in BDSM. Oh, and the lasso of truth came about because Marston was one of the inventors of the polygraph lie detector test.

Grant Morrison has said he wants to do a book getting back to these roots, but given the modern-day depiction of Wonder Woman, with the fill, coming out and all? Don't hold your breath. Especially if you're about to be bound up...
