Nick Fury's eyepatch is now synonymous with the character - but does anyone actually know why or how he came to have to wear it? Well the story is different depending on the version of the character. The original version of the character came to wear an outfit when his Howling Commandos were fighting the "Krauts" (their words at the time) during World War II. A grenade was thrown towards Fury and his men, Fury caught it and threw it back. It exploded and, while it killed the man who threw it, it also send a shard in to Fury's eye. Ultimate Nick Fury lost his eye when he was assigned to S.H.I.E.L.D.'s Weapon X program in the original Gulf War. While transporting Wolverine in his adamantium cage, an Iraqi guerrilla ambushed and killed his team, inadvertently freeing Wolverine in the process. After dispatching of the Iraqi guards, Wolverine discovered Fury alive but having lost his eye. Nick Fury, Jr. had his eye cut out by Orion, so that Orion could use it to confirm the presence of the Infinity Formula in Fury's body, then use it to replicate the effects on himself so that his youth could be restored. The Marvel Cinematic Universe version of the character - played so iconically by Samuel L. Jackson, of course - hasn't actually fully explained how he lost his eye and it hasn't been discussed by anyone else. He did, however, state that he lost it "the last time he trusted someone".
