Nick Fury is quite obviously a bad-ass - and he has, of course, fought in wars - but he is more widely known for working behind the scenes and being tactically astute than for his fighting skills. He certainly isn't known as someone who can beat up people who are more than human - given that he is merely human himself - however, he's actually so damn tough and so killed in unarmed combat that he has been known to kick the asses of characters with actual superpowers. A great example was when he faced Stonewall - the Absorbing Man's son. Stonewall has a high level of superhuman strength and durability. His durability is such that he has effectively no-sold attacks from the god Ares (including his axe), the Gorgon's sword and conventional military projectile weapons. Fury, however, took him down with two punches, having easily dodged Stonewall's initial attack.
