A short time after Matt Murdock was doused with the radioactive chemicals which took his sight, a blind ninja master named Stick came into his life and taught him how a number of martial arts and ninja skills and how to control his new abilities. Meanwhile, Matt's father Jack was desperate to become a top fighter. The elder Murdock signed with a crocked promoter called the Fixer.

“Battling” Jack became a contender while his son was secretly training at night with Stick. Soon, the Fixer called for Murdock Sr. to take a dive. Murdock refused and won a fight that Fixer had bet heavily against him on. That same night, Jack Murdock was killed by the Fixer and his men.

The orphaned junior Murdock went looking for his father’s killers and beat the Fixer’s gang mercilessly when he found them. When he confronted the Fixer, the elderly man pulled a gun on him but had a heart attack before he could use it. In Daredevil: The Man Without Fear #2, Matt went looking for Angelo, the last man involved, in a brothel. The ladies protected Angelo, and Murdock, in his anger, knocked one out of a window. In shock at his own actions, Matt left. The woman survived to eventually become Typhoid Mary. Stick abandoned the future Daredevil for his actions, though they would later reconcile.
