10 Things Marvel Wants You To Forget About Wolverine
6. Nobody Knows Who Created Him
Whilst the mysterious past he was initially blessed with has been all but eradicated, in real life the origin story of Wolverine remains incredibly murky. Its generally accepted that then-editor Roy Thomas specifically requested that a short Canadian character with that name be created, and hotshot Marvel artist John Romita Sr took the first pass on designing him, generally credited with the idea of the retractable claws ("When I make a design, I want it to be practical and functional. I thought, 'If a man has claws like that, how does he scratch his nose or tie his shoelaces?'). Nobodys quite sure who actually gave the character life, though. The first appearance in The Incredible Hulk was handled by writer Len Wein and artist Herb Trimpe, with Romita providing some alterations to the cover. Trimpe said he "distinctly remembers" Romita's sketch and that, "The way I see it, sewed the monster together and I shocked it to life!, generally rejecting co-creator status. His original costume and look was very different to the one Dave Cockrum and Gil Kane gave him in Giant Size X-Men #1, however, so should they share the credit too? Probably one for the lawyers to sort out.
