There are various points throughout the years where Ben Grimm gets his original body back, but those times usually coincide with him leaving the team for various reasons. But one time he decided to stick around, and Reed didn't want him to feel left out. So after Luke Cage ran with the team for a while, Reed constructed for Ben a high powered suit of armor that looked exactly like his original Thing form.

This, as you can imagine, did not last very long.

Let's start with the obvious reasons: it's a dumb idea. If Reed can do this, then surely he can make something sleeker and easier to move around with than The Thing's rocky shape, while still keeping the strength. And before you argue, remember that we're talking about a guy who casually decided to break into the afterlife itself, so yes, he could totally do that.

And furthermore, it completely misses the point of Ben's appearance as The Thing. It represents Reed's biggest mistake, permanently taking away his best friend's normal life because of a stupid decision he made. So why would he build him a suit that looks exactly like the thing Ben wanted to get away from in the first place?
