In 1993, Fatal Attractions was the big X-Men event. The story resulted in Magneto causing Wolverine’s skeleton to be stripped of its’ adamantium. With the huge trauma and his healing factor working overtime, Wolverine was near death’s door.

Eventually he did recover. Fans also found out Wolverine always had claws and it wasn’t an effect of the adamantium, but they also found out something that wasn’t as fun.

The adamantium in Wolverine’s system was poisoning him, which caused his healing factor to constantly battle the metal. Once the adamantium was removed, Wolverine’s “natural mutation” could take place. This allowed Wolverine to became more animalistic. This meant he began yelling instead of talking, acting like an animal, and he was more prone to berserker rages.

After an attempt to reinsert the adamantium, Wolverine became even more feral and this meant he lost his nose… for reasons. During this time, Wolverine left Xavier’s mansion to live in the wild. This was due to feeling more animal than man.

Eventually, the feral Wolverine concept was dropped as Logan arrived back at the mansion as his old-self. No explanation was provided. It was quickly pushed under the rug as though that experience was just a fever dream.
