10 Things You Didn't Know About Batman

2. Welcome To Batman

Bill Finger allegedly coined the name for Bruce Wayne€™s hometown by flicking through a phone book and happening on the name €˜Gotham Jewelers€™, but perhaps the Wayne Enterprises CEO might want to consider a move to Turkey should he ever feel the itch to up sticks. He€™d certainly feel at home in the town of Batman in south-eastern Turkey, though it might make maintaining his secret identity a bit more difficult. Deriving its name from the nearby Batman river, which itself was either named for an ancient unit of measurement or as a shortened version of the nearby Bati Raman mountain, the region€™s third largest city became a boomtown in the 1940s when the area was found to be rich in oil reserves. However, the city owes its international fame to links with the Caped Crusader and the peculiar actions of then-mayor Hüseyin Kalkan in 2008. Clearly the release of The Dark Knight didn€™t go unnoticed in that part of the world as a few months later, Kalkan filed a lawsuit against Christopher Nolan and Warner Bros. for unauthorised use of his city€™s name. Quite why he didn€™t go after DC Comics instead is unclear, but Kalkan alleged that a number of unsolved murders and a high female suicide rate were, in part, the result of the psychological impact brought on by the success of Nolan€™s films. On second thoughts, perhaps Bruce Wayne might want to give this place a wide berth.

I watch movies and I watch sport. I also watch movies about sport, and if there were a sport about movies I'd watch that too. The internet was the closest thing I could find.
