10 Things You Didn't Know About The Mighty Thor

1. Being Thor Was Killing Jane Foster

The Mighty Thor Jane Foster Death
Marvel Comics

As revealed in Thor: God of Thunder #12, Jane Foster had contracted breast cancer shortly before Thor became unworthy to wield Mjolnir. This also roughly coincided with the time that she was asked to represent Midgard, the Realm of Earth, in the Congress of Worlds. Jane began to have chemotherapy treatments but she refused to partake of any magical treatments from Asgard or any of the other member worlds.

When transformed as Thor, Jane had superhuman powers, a superhuman physique, and a healing factor. Sadly, it did not heal her cancer. The cancer simply did not affect her when she was the Mighty Thor. However, it did have the unfortunate consequence of removing the chemotherapy from her body every time Jane transformed into the God of Thunder.

Because of the purging of the chemo, and the frequent need for the Mighty Thor, Jane’s cancer had metastasized and she was at stage four. Doctor Strange examined her and told her that one more transformation into Thor would be signing her death warrant.

In the Mighty Thor #703, Strange and several of her friends had convinced Jane to give up the mantle of Thor for her own health until she learned the fate of Asgardia. Then, she was left with no choice but to take up the hammer one last time.
