10 Things You Need To Know About The Future Of DC Comics
6. Black Canary Is A Punk Rocker
Having brought a much-needed (and much-praised) revamp to Batgirl with co-writer Cameron Stewart and artist Babs Tarr, Brenden Fletcher is applying that same golden touch to her pal Black Canary. Spinning out of Batgirl, where the character has re-tooled herself as a punk singer by day, vigilante by night, Fletcher will be writing a new ongoing series with Hawkeye artist Annie Wu. Gotham City is expanding. Batgirl introduced Burnside, the city's equivalent of a hipster-y Brooklyn district far and away from all the gothic architecture and sombre crime-ridden streets of Batman's world. Black Canary takes that a step further, with the shadows and angst swapped for neon pink and guitar solos. Shes on the road with this band and trouble is following her, Fletcher explains. All she wants to do is fulfill this contract and have a good time with these people that shes getting to know, but there is trouble and she has to kick its butt. Batgirl diverged a lot from standard superhero tropes, so expect this to do the same. The DCU is getting interesting.
