10 Things You (Probably) Didn’t Know About Spider-Man
3. Peter And The Spider-Totems
Just like Silk, Peter is one of the Spider Totems. Ezekiel Sims, a man with powers just like Spider-Man’s, walked into Parker's life and presented to him the possibility that gaining his spider powers was not a random occurrence in Amazing Spider-Man #30. Sims claimed those abilities had a mystical origin and were a connection between the animal and human realm.
A group of villains connected to the concept of the totems also entered Spidey’s life. One such rogue, Morlun, beat Parker nearly to death and left him exhausted and bleeding when Aunt May discovered his identity later in the "Spider-Totem" story arc. A character called the Gatekeeper believed that Peter was unworthy of his powers and his place as a Spider Totem in Amazing Spider-Man #506.
In the "Under My Skin" storyline, The Queen had the power to control anyone with an insect gene, making Spider-Man easy prey. Through a kiss, she delivered an enzyme into his body that slowly began to transform him into a giant spider. The Queen was going to use the eventually-mutated spider to breed, but it died. From the husk, the human Peter crawled out with increased powers, including organic webbing.
