9. Siege

The Mighty Thor
Marvel Comics

In an event concerning Norman Osborn and his nefarious super-villain Cabal, consisting of Doctor Doom, the Hood, the Taskmaster and the Asgardian God Loki, Asgard (which now floated over Oklahoma), was laid under siege after Volstagg was manipulated into battling the super-villain team the U-Foes, inadvertently causing an explosion that kills everyone in a crowded football stadium.

The majority of the story consisted of the Avengers battling the Dark Avengers and the Void, until Loki sacrifices himself when he has a moment of regret for the destruction he had wrought, and allows Thor and the rest of the Avengers to finally revert the Void into his human form. Thor then unleashes the full force of his hammer to eviscerate him, until only a charred skeleton is left.

The entire event was the tipping point for Asgard in the Marvel Universe, as it became a part of Earth for a long while after the event. However, it also led to the removal of the controversial Superhero Registration Act, and the reformation of the original Avengers with the addition of Bucky as the new Captain America.
