10 Times Batman And The Joker Saved Each Other
7. The Joker Is Saved From The Death Sentence - The Joker: Devil's Advocate
When you think about it, it is fairly remarkable that the Joker hasn't died in death row. In at least one instance, though, that is solely due to Batman's interference.
When the Gotham Post Office releases a series of stamps commemorating famous comedians, people begin dying after licking them. It turns out that the stamps contain Joker Venom, causing the victims to die grinning maniacally, and being, it would seem, quite clearly the Smiling Psycho's doing.
In a fit of egotistical rage, the Joker takes people hostage at the Post Office, outraged that he does not have a stamp of his own. Captured his old nemesis, the Harlequin of Hate is tried by the DA and eventually sentenced to death.
However, for Bats - who, after all, knows the Joker better than anybody - this doesn't add up. We won't spoil who was actually responsible, in case you want to read the story, but this tale is an interesting exploration of the Caped Crusader's morality.
If anyone deserves to be sentenced to death - if anyone can be deserving of such a thing, which is a whole box of worms - then surely the Joker is as good a candidate as any, whether he committed this particular crime or not. Still, Bruce Wayne refuses to bend to this logic, and sets Joker free.
