10 Times Marvel Comics Lost Their Damn Minds

3. All Of Chuck Austen's X-Men Run

When Chuck Austen took over as the writer for the X-Men, he was determined to give fans the kind of stories they had never seen before. He certainly succeeded.

That is to say that Austen's run is hated by both X-Men fans and people with working eyeballs for it's appalling stories. He's perhaps best known for the unforgivable crime of trying to ruin Nightcrawler by making him the son of a demon, but that doesn't even come close to the madness of his other plots.

They include Iceman being reduced to just a head and reforming his body out of Havok's pee, the Church of Humanity trying to make Nightcrawler pope as part of a plot to bring down Catholicism and the "fact" that mutants are immune to AIDS.

Then there's the romance. Havok was totally ok with being mind-controlled by a little kid into dating his mother, but not even that can compare to She Lies With Angels. The story focuses on the relationship between Angel and Husk, Cannonball's sister whose age at the time was questionable to say the least. It culminates with them doing the nasty on the Guthrie farm, not just in mid-air, but in-front of Husk's mother as well, in a story featuring lines directly lifted from Romeo and Juliet.

Unsurprisingly, Chuck Austen hasn't written another comic for Marvel since.

I was just a mild-mannered NCTJ accredited journalist until one day I found out the truth... that I could share my nerdy ramblings with people on the internet! It's just like mumbling to myself on the train, but without all the strange looks.
