10 Times Marvel Went Too Far

3. Clone Thor Murdering Goliath - Civil War

Rogue Ultimatum
Marvel Comics

The best thing about Civil War the movie is that it was absolutely, fundamentally, NOTHING like the original book.

When a group of celebrity superheroes cause an explosion that turns an elementary school into a crater, the U.S. government decides to finally rein in their superpowered population with the Superhero Registration Act. But since Civil War was written by Mark Millar, of course this morally fascinating premise gave way to needless brutality, everyone acting like angry idiots - even when taking into account the kind of stress these circumstances have put our heroes under - and it all generally being not a fun time.

But at least the heroes, despite their heavy disagreements, aren't ACTIVELY trying to kill each other for the first three or so issues. Then issue four comes around and we get the moment that truly kicks off the eponymous Civil War: Tony Stark revealing that he cloned the then dead Thor, who then brutally murders hero Goliath.

Goliath was never the most important hero in Marvel's library, but bringing him out of mothballs just to blast a hole in him for shock value was a whole new low.
