10 Times Spider-Man Won A Fight He Should Have Lost

2. Battering Firelord

Iron Man vs Spider-Man
Marvel Comics

How strong is Firelord? He's tussled with, and beaten, entire teams of X-Men all on his own, he's held his own against Thor, and nearly defeated Jean Grey when she had bonded with the ultra-poweful Phoenix Force.

So, there's no way that Spider-Man could ever defeat him, right?

Well, in Amazing Spider-Man #270 in 1985, Spider-Man does. Firelord spends much of the issue chasing Spidey across New York City for reasons that are too complicated, and silly, to explain. Spider-Man tries defeating Firelord by luring him into an abandoned building that is then blown up by construction workers and into gas station that Spidey tricks Firelord into blowing up himself.

Both of these efforts fail. So Spider-Man does the next best thing: He starts punching Firelord like crazy, eventually causing the super-powered alien to crumple to the ground, unconscious.

This is undeniably a great moment for Spider-Man. But Firelord in previous appearances was hit square by Thor's hammer and still got up. It's hard to believe that Spider-Man's punches, no matter how many of them he landed, would fell this cosmic-powered baddie.
