If you thought Kyle Rayner screwed up in his Green Lantern duties, boy, you are not going to like John Stewart. Not to be confused with Jon Stewart, the host of the Daily Show, this character became a fan favourite after appearing in those brilliant Justice League cartoons. He has a much smaller fan base on the planet Xanshi, principally because it doesn't exist anymore, and that's partly Stewart's fault. During the Cosmic Odyssey mini-series, a group of cosmic superheroes are tasked with containing the destructive Anti-Life Equation, which has been scattered across all four corners of the universe. Stewart is teamed up with Martian Manhunter to deal with Xanshi, whose citizens are slowly being poisoned by the Equation. It turns out it's worse than that: there's actually a bunch of bombs concealed about the planet, ready to destroy it - and everyone on it - at any moment. Feeling cocky, Stewart tosses a battle-damaged Manhunter to safety to deal with the bombs on his own. Except it turns out the bombs are yellow, the only colour Green Lantern rings are useless against. So instead of defusing the bomb, Stewart high-tails it out of there, dooming the Xanshi population to death, having sent away the only other person who could've saved them.
Tom Baker is the Comics Editor at WhatCulture! He's heard all the Doctor Who jokes, but not many about Randall and Hopkirk. He also blogs at http://communibearsilostate.wordpress.com/
