10 Times Superheroes Weren’t There To Save The Day
5. Ozymandias Unleashes The Squid - Watchmen #11-12
One cliche in comics is "The Supervillain Monologue". This is when the baddie explains their evil plan in perfect detail, giving the hero more than enough time to stop it. This trope is so universal in comics, most readers just accept it. As unrealistic as it is, the stories wouldn't work if the Joker shot Batman immediately after capturing him. I mean, could you imagine how crazy it would be if the supervillain actually won?
Which brings us to the antagonist of the Watchmen graphic novel, Adrian Veidt AKA Ozymandias. When Nite Owl and Rorschach learn that the vigilante, The Comedian, was murdered, they deduce he was killed by their former teammate, Ozymandias.
When they confront him, Ozymandias explains he only killed The Comedian because he stumbled upon his masterplan. Ozy intends to fake an alien invasion that will kill millions, forcing all conflicts on Earth to end so humanity can unite against a common foe.
When Nite Owl tells him they will stop his diabolical scheme, Ozymandias points out that he initiated his plan just before they arrived. He reveals on his monitor that his "alien" appeared in New York 35 minutes prior and massacred millions of civilians.
