2. Breaking General Zod's Neck

The entire final act of Man of Steel has generated a lot of controversy since it was released back in 2013, but I think it's fair to say that the destruction and thousands of lives which were lost are an inevitable part of a battle where the fate of the world was on the line (even if Superman really should have flown General Zod into space or away from such a built up area to avoid all of that).

However, defending his choice to break the neck of the villain isn't quite so easy. Yes, he did it to save a family that Zod was about to wipe out, but why take such drastic measures for them after entire buildings full of civilians had collapsed during their fistfight? The sight of Superman killing one of his enemies didn't go down well with fans or comic book creators, and him deciding to murder Zod rather than finding a way to stop him doesn't exactly point to this latest big screen version of the character being a great hero.

With rumours pointing to him threatening to break the neck of a criminal in Batman v Superman, this unheroic take on the Man of Steel looks to be here for the long haul.
