10 Most Tragic Deaths In The History Of Spider-Man
3. Gwen Stacy
We bloody loved Emma Stone in the Amazing Spider-Man films, but we knew she was doomed from the beginning. We knew it even more when the first on-set photos from the second movie came out, which saw her decked out in the iconic outfit Gwen Stacy died in in the comics. The Night Gwen Stacy Died is not only one of the most famous Spider-Man comics of all time, but one of the most famous comic book storylines period. In the context of the film, this robbed the plot of some of the emotional gravitas, because we saw it coming. Back in the day, though, it picked a heck of a punch. Mary Jane has since become Peter Parker's one and only love interest, but for a long time there he only had eyes for Gwen. As recounted in the delightful/heartbreaking graphic novel Spider-Man: Blue, their college romance was genuinely sweet, mature and loving. If we've learnt anything from this article so far it's that the universe - or, more accurately, the creative teams - won't ever let Peter Parker be happy. We refer you to our earlier George RR Martin comparison. At this point we were pretty used to the idea of superheroes having long term romances, too - nothing was ever gonna happen to Clark Kent and Lois Lane, after all. Between their fans and the total psychopathic, insane thinking it would take to tear Pete and Gwen apart, we never thought it'd happen in a million years. So Norman Osborn going full loon, kidnapping Gwen and tossing her off a bridge was incredibly tragic and heartbreaking - and that's before you get to the possibility that Spidey's attempt to save her may have snapped her neck.
