10 Most Tragic Deaths In X-Men History

2. Professor X

When the Phoenix Force arrived back on Earth during the Avengers vs. X-Men crossover event, it took control of Cyclops, Namor, Emma Frost, Magik and Colossus and turned them into the Phoenix Five. These Five then start to reshape the world, and although they supply food and water around the globe and end all conflicts going on, the Avengers formulate a plan to stop them because their power was growing unchecked. Xavier assists their battle with both the Phoenix Five and the X-Men, the latter of which they come in conflict with after they try to kidnap Hope Summers, believing her to be the key to getting rid of the Phoenix. The Five then proceed to attack major cities around the world and take prisoners. Disgusted with their behavior, Xavier contacts Cyclops and states that if the Five don€™t stop what they€™re doing, he will bring them down. Eventually Xavier, Magneto, and the Avengers attack Cyclops and Emma Frost on Utopia, who by now are sharing the Phoenix Force between the two of them. While engaging Xavier in a psychic battle, Cyclops siphons off the Phoenix energy from Emma and becomes the lone host of the Force. Becoming the Dark Phoenix, Cyclops, one of Xavier€™s first students, is corrupted and kills Xavier, his former mentor. Once Cyclops is captured and freed of the Phoenix Force, which by now has spread across the Earth and restarted the mutant population, he feels guilty for killing Xavier. However, because the mutant race is now repopulated, he states he would do it all again if he had to. That€™s the true tragedy of this story. Yes, it€™s horrible that Xavier was killed by one of his oldest students, but for Cyclops to say that he€™d do it over again if he had to is just horrid. Yes, we could get into an argument about the greater good or whether Scott was truly in control of his power at the time, but I don€™t know if I€™d say I€™d kill my mentor again if need be.
