Two for the price of one here, as both the way he was killed off and then, finally, brought back to life, are definitely shocking moments.

Being the most unpopular Robin has always meant that Jason Todd was up against it, especially when the fans started to openly rebel against his character. This was in no small part to the fact that he was seen as a second rate Dick Grayson and when you added into the mix his constant whining, fans just didn't take too him.

So when DC held the now legendary phone vote as to whether or not he should be killed off, it came as no surprise when the answer was a (narrow) yes. What was a shocker, however, was the brutality with which he was dispatched.

Beaten almost to death by the Joker and his trusty crowbar, a very large bomb would be what finally saw this Robin put out to pasture, and that was the end of that. Until a new vigilante/villain showed up years later and set about taking over Gotham.

This brutal new character would go toe to toe with the Batman, in an all too familiar way, and when the red hood was finally removed, it was Jason Todd, back from the dead, who now ran roughshod over the criminal underworld.
