The DC Extended Universe took a hit when Justice League failed to garner fans' attention like Marvel Studios' Avengers projects, but that doesn't mean the franchise is dead in the water. As it happens, the water may be the franchise's saving grace, thanks in large part to Aquaman's success.

Aquaman may have revitalized the DCEU in much the same was Wonder Woman kept it alive, but it may be on the verge of spawning some spinoffs of its own via a feature film focused on The Trench. Producer Peter Safran talked about the prospect of a Trench spinoff in an interview with Den Of Geek:

“One of the areas that we always loved right from the beginning was the idea of the Trench – we loved that real sense of jeopardy and danger that it embodies, so we always thought of it as a place where we could explore other stories. And I think we have a great idea of what one of those stories could be.”

A Trench-focused movie would likely be of a much smaller scale than the other DCEU films, but it would also stray into the waters of a horror film. Given the success of Aquaman, it's likely this will happen, though the film remains "in development" by late 2019.
