10 Visually Impaired Comic Characters Who Can Kick Ass
5. Doctor Midnight (Inverted Vision)
There are a number of characters with this same name in DC comics, but only Beth Chapel, an African-American medical doctor, has utilised this spelling of the name (Doctor "Midnight"). Her mentor, Dr. Charles McNider, was actually the wartime hero once calling himself "Doctor Mid-Nite" - though she did not realise this at first. While trying to rescue her patients during an earthquake, Chapel was blinded by an oxygen explosion. Dr. McNider operated on her himself and, because he couldnt restore her normal vision, he and a team of fellow physicians gave Chapel hi-tech ocular implants - which were connected to her pineal gland, allowing her vision to be partially restored. Her eyes became too sensitive for normal light, but she developed extremely sharp vision in total darkness.
When she found out about McNider's identity as Doctor Mid-Nite, she was inspired to follow in his footsteps. She trained in unarmed combat and used her ability to see in the dark as a gift to fight evil and has worked alongside the likes of Infinity, Inc. and the Shadow Fighters.
