9. Hooty

Hooty is the aptly named pet owl of Doctor Mid-Nite who crashed through the window of Charles McNider's private study and went on to inspire him to take on the identity of Doctor Mid-Nite. The doctor was blinded when a mobster tossed a grenade through his surgery's window and when Hooty arrived in his study, the owl loosened the bandages around his eyes to reveal that the doctor could see perfectly in the dark.

There have been at least fourteen Hootys over the years, each carrying the same name and playing a part in their owner's adventures. The series of 'Hooty' owls have helped Doctor Mid-Nite in many ways including scouting locations and helping with the bringing down of enemies. One Hooty, who was given half a Miraclo pill after an injury, flew through the chest of the criminal who had injured him.

The succession of Hooty shows how important these pet owls were to Dr McNider and - given that the original Hooty was stuffed and kept by the Justice Society of America - he was not the only one they meant a lot to. Although Pieter Cross' Doctor Mid-Nite also has a pet owl, his is named Charlie after Charles McNider.
