While Bruce Banner was killed in the third issue of Civil War II, that death had its roots in Captain America: Steve Rogers #5.

In terms of the one to inflict the fatal blow on Banner, that was a job that Hawkeye and his trusty arrows. The reasoning for killing Banner was that he was about to embark on some gamma therapy that was going to backfire and turn him into a completely uncontrollable, murderous version of The Hulk. But this wasn’t always the way the situation was meant to play.

Concerned that the future-predicting Ulysses was about to rumble Cap’s allegiance to Hydra, Rogers looked to switch Ulysses’ attention elsewhere. And so, Steve arranges for Bruce Banner to receive some new gamma research that will prompt the Jade Giant to start experimenting on himself.

All of sudden, Ulysses sees a new future in which all of this leads to The Hulk becoming crazed. Deeming this a nightmare scenario, the decision is made to kill Bruce Banner before this future can play out.

And so, when Carol Danvers asks Bruce to join her outside for a chat, Hawkeye is waiting to fire an arrow into the skull of poor Banner.
