10 Worst Things Captain America Has Done

2. Throwing Jack Flag To His Death – Captain America: Steve Rogers #1

Captain America Mystique
Marvel Comics

Like so many other heroes, Captain America has had plenty of protégés and sidekicks working alongside him. One of the more unfortunate of these protégés, was Jack Flag.

In the “wait, Cap is really working for Hydra?” twist from 2016, readers were shown a far darker, murkier side to the Sentinel of Liberty. And on the receiving end of this evil Steve Rogers was Jack Flag, who would be killed at the Captain’s hands.

Having recruited young Jack to work for S.H.I.E.L.D., Captain America takes the eager Flag with him on a mission to track down Baron Zemo. In a shocking moment, after Jack refuses Cap’s orders to stop following Zemo, Steve casually throws his new sidekick from their airplane before quipping “Hail Hydra”.

The spirited Jack would survive the fall thanks to his healing abilities, although he would be left in a coma. Attempting to finish the job, Captain America makes a beeline for the S.H.I.E.L.D. medical bay with the intention of poisoning Flag. It’s then that Rogers finds out that Jack’s parents have decided to take him off life support.

Even worse? Steve Rogers pretends to mourn his fallen protégé and even consoled Jack Flag’s parents at the funeral.
